William Franklin McMickle, 66, of Sparta, NC; passed away at his home on August 3rd, 2025. He was born in Bethesda, MD on December 4th, 1958 to the late Billy Frank and Margaret Juanita Cheeks McMickle. Shortly after he was born, his family settled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army, Military Occupational Specialist, 94 B, stationed in Alaska. He later returned home and found his knack as a carpenter. William was truly an amazing builder and his talents and craftsmanship will be admired for generations to come in the homes, businesses, barns, and many things he built with his hands.
He kept his family's heritage and legacy alive by passing down his wisdom, knowledge and know how of appalachian living to his family and loved ones. He was a true mountain man who loved fishing, hunting and the outdoors. He enjoyed poling his family in his wooden, hand built, flat bottom boats up and down the New River.
William is survived by two daughters, Crystal and husband Marty Hamm of Sparta, and Sophia Grace McMickle of Rural Retreat, Va.; also by his granddaughter, Ally Sides and husband Austin of Sparta and his grandson, Grayson Hamm, also of Sparta; a special friend, Tammy Royal, of the home; one sister, Shirley (McKee) Brewer of Independence, Va.; a niece and nephew also survive.
A Celebration of Life service with military rites conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034 of Sparta will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, August 15th, 2025 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
