Thomas "Tommy" Calhoun Obituary

Thomas "Tommy" Lee Calhoun, age 62, of Sparta, NC; passed away Sunday, May 19th, 2024, at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC.

Tommy was born August 3rd, 1961, in Alleghany County to Ruby Richardson Calhoun and the late Robert "Bob" Lee Calhoun.

Tommy lived his life selflessly. When his father passed away during his senior year of high school, he gave up plans to attend college to help with the family cabinet making business. He was a talented woodworker and continued to own/operate the third generation business upon the passing of his grandfather.

Tommy prided himself on working hard and demonstrated tireless dedication to his many crafts that was matched only by his selfless commitment to serving others, demonstrating an unwavering resolve to make a meaningful impact in his community. With each endeavor, he not only showcased his remarkable abilities but also uplifted those around him.

Tommy was a friend to everyone. He was kind and jovial to all. Tommy would never say no to anyone in need and was willing to give everyone a second chance. He was blessed to have a wide circle of very close and loyal friends.

Tommy devoted his life to the Boy Scouts: achieving Eagle Scout status, participating with his sons during their time in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and serving as treasurer until his passing.

Tommy joined the Sparta Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department at age 22 and had remained an active and integral member for 41 years. During this time, he served as secretary and treasurer. He was a vital part of the success of the Fiddlers Convention, working months in advance to ensure that it ran smoothly. He formed friendships with the contestants and fans from all over, many of whom considered this event their favorite.

Tommy was involved in many civic organizations. He was a past president of the Lions Club and was treasurer for the Fairgrounds Committee. Tommy cared deeply for his community and was chairman of the Town Planning Board.

As involved as Tommy was in all of these activities, he shunned any recognition or spotlight. He was a private person that loved his family, friends, and community very deeply.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Burnette Calhoun of the home; two sons: Bobby Calhoun and wife Marissa of Charlotte, Ben Calhoun and wife Megan of Columbia, SC; three granddaughters: Olivia, Maddie and Ella; mother, Ruby Calhoun of Sparta; a sister, Debbie Calhoun of Greensboro; several cousins; many, many special friends also survive.

Funeral Services to honor the life of Tommy will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024 at Sparta United Methodist Church with Reverend Michelle Foster-Beckerleg officiating. Interment will follow in Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Tuesday, May 21st, 2024, at Thomas Family Funeral Service.
