Thomas "Jack" Nichols Obituary

Thomas Jackson Nichols, age 91 of Sparta, passed away December 19th, 2022 at his residence. Jack was born November 11th, 1931 in Alleghany County at the old home place on Hwy 21 S to Candace Irwin Nichols and Isaac Lundy Nichols. He would grow up in this home as the youngest of the five brothers and the youngest in the family.

Jack loved Pine Swamp and he lived most of his adult life just a few miles from where he was born. His oldest brother, Garnet, was 22 years old when Jack was born and his sister, Lou, was 19 years old. Lou's son Dalton or Dalty as Jack called him was born two years after Jack. They were not just uncle and nephew, they were best buddies and would remain close their whole lives. He married Annie "Louise" Nichols and they had a strong, loving marriage until her death June 8, 2018. There was the tragedy of losing their infant son Garry and they thought they would not have children, but then on December 4, 1967 they received an early Christmas present, a bouncy 7 pound baby girl, the much loved daughter you see before you - Lisa. Lisa married Donald Rector on August 17th, 1991 and Jack and Louise had a son-in-law they loved like a SON.

Jack was Baptized in or about 1970 and was a lifelong, faithful member of Little River Primitive Baptist Church. He worked for NCDOT for many years, farmed and made wood carvings. No truer words can be spoken but to say Jack was a good son, father, brother, uncle, neighbor, and friend. It is an honor to have known him for what he was most of all, a man who Loved God, his family and his friends. If you listen closely you can hear the shouting as the whole family welcomes him home.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters, his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise, an infant son Garry, a special nephew Dalton Bennett.

Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Rector and husband Donald of Sparta; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends also survive.

Funeral Services to honor the life of Jack will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 21st, 2022 at Little River Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Steve Dillard and Elder James Hayden officiating. Tammy Starnes will deliver the Eulogy. Interment will follow at Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Little River Primitive Baptist Church c/o Brett and Amy Walsh 726 Jackson Dr., Piney Creek, NC 28663.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Alleghany Memorial Hospital for you care of Jack.
