Thomas "Tom" Clay Cox, age 69, of Laurel Springs, NC; passed away Friday, November 24th, 2023 at his residence.
Tom was born December 31, 1953 in Ashe County, NC to the late Clay Haywood and Margaret Elizabeth Bush Cox.
Tom grew up on his family's cattle farm in Alleghany County. He became a pharmacist and later moved to California where he worked for the West Los Angeles VA and met his wife Catherine. In 2009, he returned to North Carolina and eventually built his dream home on family land with a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A self-taught musician, he loved playing the blues on his vintage Fender Stratocaster guitar. He also enjoyed spending his retirement playing games with family, caring for their cats, working out, gardening and bush hogging on his new Kubota. His one regret would have been to not see his daughter Taylor graduate from High Point University. His family will treasure memories of his final day gathered in love and joy on Thanksgiving.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Catherine Cox of the home; two daughters: Melissa Cox of California and Taylor Cox of the home; three sisters: Alice "Pinky" Cox of Butner, NC, Paula Cox-Fishman and husband Ted of Greensboro, NC, Beth Phipps and husband Lane of Mouth of Wilson, VA; two nephews: Austin Phipps and wife Carlie, Dustin Phipps and wife Kayla all of Grassy Creek; great-nieces and great-nephews: Westin, Josie, Allie, Coltin, and Jencie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Margie Patterson, Beth Patterson, Jeremy Patterson, and Tim Patterson and wife Lea.
A private graveside service will be held at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 18th, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Sparta with Reverend Matt Harris officiating. The family will greet friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
