He was a life long member of the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW post 7034 of Sparta, a member of the Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department and a former Chief of Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Russell is survived by his childhood sweetheart beginning in first grade and then later his wife of 65 years, Peggy Shaw of the home; two daughters: Sonia Everhart and husband Tim of Charlotte, Shelley Higgins and husband Ryan of Sparta; two grandsons who made him proud, Garrett and Logan Higgins of Sparta; a brother, Marvin Shaw and wife Betty of Glade Valley; three sisters: Martha Edwards and husband Mack of Ennice, Mabel Hamm of Sparta, Nancy Wooten of Glade Valley; special friends: Lamon Loggins, Freddie Price, John Choate, Jerry Bauguess and Larry Rector; seven sisters in law, nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends also survive.

Funeral services to honor the life of Russell will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, November 6th, 2025 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service with Reverends Max Combs and Charlie Bennett officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
