Peter Howard Morrow, 72, of Roaring Gap, North Carolina and Venice, Florida, passed away on July 28, 2023 suddenly and unexpectedly following back surgery. He was born on March 15, 1951 to the late Richard and Orla Morrow in Paris, Ontario Canada. A graduate of Ventura High School in Ventura, California, he went on to play football at Western Carolina University under the late Coach Bob Waters, who became a lifelong mentor.
Pete had an accomplished 40 year career in the trucking industry where he rose to executive levels with UPS Freight, Overnite Transportation Company, and served as President of Motor Cargo in Salt Lake City, UT. Pete was successful in building relationships with all those around him, and took pride in developing leaders within his organization and serving as a mentor to many. Pete retired in 2011 and relocated to Venice, FL.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Ellen Morrow, the love of his life. He is also survived by his daughter Katy (Matt) Harvey, and stepsons Greg (Holly) Loos, Michael (Janet) Loos and Matt (Alisha) Loos, and grandchildren Wells Harvey, Landon Loos, Caroline Harvey, Avery Loos and Jackson Loos and great grandchildren Christian Sardis, MacKenzie Arendall and Mason Davis, and siblings John (Joan) Morrow, Brent (Carolyn) Morrow and Linda Gumble.
He was a man of faith and exemplified the qualities of honesty, integrity, generosity, and humility. His love and devotion to Karen, along with his immediate and extended family, lifelong friends, and his beloved grandchildren (to whom he was known as “Poppy”), knew no bounds. No matter the circumstances, he always found the time to lend a helping hand, offer invaluable wisdom and provide support to those he loved. He had an immense sense of pride for his family, and was eager to share the various academic and athletic achievements of his grandchildren, whom he adored.
His favorite place on earth was High Meadows Country Club, where he was a member for 42 years. What began in 1982 with a round of golf with two friends, dinner, and a chance meeting with a couple of bankers, ended with him going home to inform his family they now owned one third of a house in High Meadows. That decision began a lasting relationship with High Meadows, where he served as the President of the Board of Directors in 2014, along with many other committees over the years.
High Meadows was the place where he developed his deep-rooted love for the game of golf, for which he traveled all over the world to play. His love of golf was only matched by his genuine desire to share knowledge and help others improve their game. He also loved college football Saturdays and the joy of sports, and celebrated every exhilarating play, regardless of which team was on the field. Those who knew him would also say he had a knack for all things handy, with impressive skills instilled in him by his late father, and was always willing to lend his talents to help others.
Pete lived his life with optimism, never met a stranger, and could quickly be at ease talking with anyone he met. His unwavering generosity touched the lives of countless individuals. May he find eternal peace, knowing that his legacy of kindness lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to High Meadows Living Tree Foundation, P.O. Box 440, Roaring Gap, NC 28668.
