Myrtle (Cornwell) Shelton

Myrtle Ruth Cornwell Shelton, age 87, entered eternal rest on December 24, 2023 at her daughter's home in Sparta.

Myrtle was born October 5, 1936 in Los Angeles, CA. She was the youngest of nine children. She moved eastward across the US her entire life ending up in Sparta, NC living with her daughter and son in law , Rebecca & Tony Southern, in her final years.

She played high school basketball and was also the business manager for the yearbook staff her senior year at Landon High School in Jacksonville, FL. She met and married Charles Shelton in 1954 and worked in banking before staying home to raise their six children - - Karen (Long), Deborah (Shelton), Charles Dee (Shelton), Rebecca (Southern), Carl (Shelton) and Kathleen (Shelton).

She was quiet by nature knowing that you learn more by listening than by talking. Although quiet, she had a wonderful sense of humor and kept it until the very end. She also kept her adventurous spirit - even taking a 2,500 mile road trip at age 79 with her sister-in-law. She rode in the 2023 July 4th Parade in Sparta, NC at age 86 in a 1964 Plymouth Barracuda proudly waving the American flag and wearing her patriotic t-shirt, necklace and shades. This was her first ride in a parade and her final ride while alive on this earth. She is now celebrating on the streets of gold.

In addition to five of her children, she is survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all of us.....until we meet again.
