Mary Alspaugh Obituary

Mary Dena Richardson-Alspaugh of Sparta passed quietly from home to the place of eternal peace on Friday, November 27, 2020.
Dena, who was named for her late father Ross Dean Richardson, was born October 6, 1955 in Sparta to Ross Dean And Betty Beard RIchardson. She was a member of the Alleghany High Class of 1972. She lived most of her life away, but came back to Sparta in recent years.
Dena was an exceptionally talented artist who loved painting scenes from her mountain home, the beach and horses. She was a gifted interior designer and decorator. She loved horses and was a very able horsewoman. She took great delight in all that was beautiful, whether it be in nature, vintage clothing, antiques or beautiful souls that she met along her journey thru life. She went to great lengths to bring smiles and laughter to all she encountered. Her joy was found in making others journey a bit brighter.
Dena was preceded in death by her father, Ross Dean. She is survived by her mother Betty Beard Richardson of Whitehead and her son Joe McMeans and companion Ashley Franks of Deltaville, Virginia. Her fiance, Capt. Greg Plain of Sparta also survives. She will be missed by her surviving siblings; sister Milly B. Richardson of Sparta, Ross E Richardson of Whitehead, and John B. Richardson and wife Linda C. Richardson also of Whitehead. Several very special nephews also survive; Brien and Sandy Kinsey and son Finn of Sparta, Jody Mabe and Vickie Bach, Hunter and Lauren Mabe of Glade Creek, and B.J. Richardson of Sparta. Many beloved first cousins, whom Dena grew up with , also survive.
A private family service will be held in Whitehead. The family respectfully notes that flowers and food will not be necessary. Donations, however, to the charity of one's choice will be appreciated. Or just think of her when you see a beautiful sunset, sunrise or rainbow knowing she is now one with His beauty.
