Madge (Wyatt) Irwin

Madge Wyatt Irwin, age 94 of 356 Irwin Farm Lane, Sparta, NC. passed away on Friday, February 24th, 2023 at her residence.

Madge was born December 28th, 1928 in Alleghany County to the late Glenn and Sally Coffey Wyatt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Wade Bryan Irwin, Sr. and her sister, Mabel Hardin.

As an avid reader, Madge found the Alleghany County library to be a treasure trove for hours of reading pleasure. She enjoyed quilting, playing bridge, viewing old western movies, and listening to country music. A welcomed treat to her many friends was the offering of a stem-filled champagne glass as they visited on her porch facing Spicer Mountain. The Kansas City Chiefs and Nascar provided Madge Sundays of excitement. Madge, as a longtime monetary supporter of the Alleghany Educational Foundation, provided scholarships to graduating students pursuing educational endeavors.

Survivors include three children: Bobby Irwin and wife, Suzanne of Sparta; Jill Mattocks and husband Peter of Cary, NC. Kellye Betancourt and husband Dr. Luis Betancourt of Harrisonburg, Va.; four grandchildren: Bryan S. Irwin and wife Tammy of Winston Salem, Jennifer Tuffo and husband Kevin of Green Mountain, NC. Peter Glenn Mattocks and wife Brooke of Hillsborough, NC, Wesley Austin Mattocks of Bend, Oregon; eight great-grandchildren; beloved nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

In lieu of flowers and food, the family request memorials be made to the Alleghany Educational Foundation, PO Box 33 Sparta, NC. 28675 and/or the Alleghany County Library, 115 Atwood St. Sparta, NC. 28675.

Gratitude and special thankfulness to family ( Bobby, Suzanne, Jennifer, Bryan, Dan Murray,) caregivers ( Lisa Crouse, Kelly Smith, and Janet Pokorney)  Neighbors Brett Liverman , Jay Woodruff, Mc Hones’, and Lewis’   were always on hand if Madge needed assistance. The staff of Medi Home Hospice (Teri, Donna and Brittany) will long be remembered by the family for their compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2pm on Saturday April 29th, 2023. Location will be announced at a later date.
