Lucy May (Poole) Royall

Lucy Poole Royall, age 90 of Sparta passed away peacefully at her home on January 10th 2023.

She was born May 2nd 1932 in Alleghany County to the late Hurley and Maggie Poole. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Mack Royall Sr, a brother, James Poole and three sisters: Maxine Andrews, Ethel Smith, and Virginia Hash.

Lucy was a lifelong resident of Alleghany County and a lifelong member of New Haven Church of the Brethren. 

For almost 30 years, she was Co Owner/operator of Sparta Restaurant along with her sister-in-law Betty Sue Poole. She loved her family and spent many of the latter years of her life caring for family members.

Her survivors include two children: Andy Mack Royall Jr and wife Elaine of Roaring Gap, LuAnn Tucker and husband Randy of Laurel Springs.  Five grandchildren: Patrick Tucker and wife Julie of Sparta, Drew Royall of Roaring Gap, Jenny LeMasters and husband Justin of Sparta, Leia Benfield and husband Jason of Sparta, Trey Royall and wife Alyssa of Ararat, NC. Fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.  Also surviving include two sisters-in-laws, Betty Sue Poole of Sparta, and Betty Jo Hanks of Walnut Cove, as well as several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral Services to honor the life of Lucy will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday January 15th, 2023 at Thomas Family Funeral Service with Brother Ed Hall and Reverend Bobby Reed officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the cemetery of New Haven Brethren Church in Twin Oaks.

The family would like to thank the Staff of Hospice and special care givers Beckey Hash and Kathy Musgrove as well as two helpers, Reina Mopardo and Betty Gwynn. Special love and thanks to her great-granddaughter Lucy LeMasters who helped care for her nightly the last week of her life.
