Obituary
Lillie Marie Cox Atwood, age 88, of Sparta; passed away Thursday, March 31st, 2022 at her residence.
Lillie was born November 24th, 1933 in Grayson County, Virginia to the late Carl and Kate Caudill Cox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elgin Atwood and a brother, James Cox. She had a love for gardening and a great love for her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. That love even extended to all animals, but cats were her favorite.
Lillie is survived by two daughters: Dianne Proffit and husband Rick of Laurel Springs, Betty A. Maines of Sparta; four grandchildren: Mitch Atwood and wife Amanda of Sparta, Brian Proffit and wife Tina of Sparta, Brooke Proffit of New York, and Hunter Maines of Sparta; four great-grandchildren: Blake and Lillie Proffit, Kate and John Atwood; a special friend, Roy Owens of Sparta; two sisters: Janie Murphy of Sparta, Louise Higgins of Sparta; a brother, J.R. Cox and wife Evalena of Sparta; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends also survive.
A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church Cemetery. No formal visitation will be held.
In lieu of food and flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Home Union Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Lonnie Dalton, 1318 Fender Road, Sparta, NC 28675 or to Mountain Valley Hospice, 401 Technology Ln. Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030.
