Joe David Stoker, age 77, of 553 Doctors Street, Sparta; passed away Tuesday, May 12th, 2020 at Alleghany Health in Sparta.
Joe was born November 27th, 1942 in Alleghany County to the late Click and Lorraine Matthews Stoker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Stoker.
As a native of Alleghany County, Joe had many accomplishments throughout his life. In 1961, he married the love of his life, Brenda Roberts. After graduating high school, he played collegiate football at Lees McRae College. He became a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta in 1964 and during that time, served his church as a Deacon for several years. He retired from Cherry Lane Volunteer Fire Department after serving 20 years and also served as the Chief during a portion of that time. Joe farmed for many years in cabbage, dairy, Christmas Trees and cattle. In 2018, Joe was inducted into the Alleghany County Agriculture Hall of Fame. His greatest accomplishment was being a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, spending many hours supporting his children and grandchildren in sports activities and agriculture events. He always looked forward to baseball season when he could watch his favorite team, The Atlanta Braves.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Brenda R. Stoker; three children: Diane Warden and husband Dale of Julian, NC, Penny Wheeler and husband Randy of Charleston, SC, Scott Stoker and wife Shane of Glade Valley; seven grandchildren: Zack Griffin (Caite Swaney) of Chicago, IL, Micha Pegram and husband Jordan of Mebane, NC, Karly Stoker and Isaac Stoker both of Glade Valley, Ian Wheeler of Charlotte, Ryan Wheeler and Anna Wheeler both of Dallas, TX; a great-grandson, Christian Pegram of Mebane; a brother, Gray Stoker (Cordelia Moxley) of Glade Valley; several nieces and a nephew also survive.
A Private Funeral Service to honor the life of Joe will be held on Thursday, May 14th at First Baptist Church of Sparta with the Reverend John Attaway officiating. Interment will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will be live stream the service from the facebook page of Brenda Stoker. Please tune in at 11:00 am.
