James Edwin Dowell, age 85, of Sparta; passed away Sunday, August 20th, 2023, August 20th, 2023 at his residence.
James was born May 3rd, 1938 in Alleghany County to the late Victor and Edna Burchette Dowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy McCann; two brothers: Junior Dowell and Billy Dowell.
James enjoyed gardening, yard work, cleaning his car and watching westerns. He was a very good father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sue Ward Dowell of the home; two daughters: Lisa D. Halsey and husband Terry of Sparta, Cathy Dowell of the home; a son, Alan Dowell and wife Jennifer of Sparta; four grandchildren: Tyler and Selena Halsey of Sparta, Landon Dowell and wife Samantha of Malvern, PA, Caitlin Dowell of Sparta; one brother, Roger Dowell and wife Wanda of Sparta; a sister, Barbara White and husband George of Laurel Springs; a sister-in-law, Barbara "Bobbie" Simons Dowell; several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of James will be held on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Whitehead-Joines Cemetery with Pastor Matt Harris officiating. No formal visitation will be held.
