Harold R. Wesp was born in Elizabeth, NJ to Frank and Florence (Hopler) Wesp. He passed peacefully at his residence to be with the Lord on December 7, 2022.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Wesp of Havelock, NC and is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Hanby) Wesp of Sparta, NC; two daughters, Diana Wesp Hastings of Newport, NC and Brenda Wesp Nelson of Merritt Island, FL; as well as stepdaughter Jennifer Giles and husband Jeffrey of Sparta, NC and three stepsons: Jonathan West and wife Marcia of Erie, PA, Phillip Graser and wife Peggy of Alaska, Theodore Graser and wife Sandy of Tennessee; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a member of the Havelock community and a true Patriot. He was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War, which he served two tours each.
Harold dedicated his working career faithfully serving his country for a total of 44 years. At the age of 17, he enlisted and joined the Air National Guard. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and honorably served for over 24 years retiring as Gunnery Sergeant. He was then transferred to the fleet Marine Corps Reserve. He attended and received his associates degree from Craven Community College in New Bern, NC. He entered civil service working at MCAS Cherry Point base, at the NADEP on military aircraft until he retired in 1993.
A benefactor of 32 different charities, Harold lived a life of generosity and kindness. He touched the hearts of many and he loved animals. He was an avid football fan and favored the Carolina Panthers NFL as his team. He enjoyed fishing, reading, history and movies. He was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Havelock and was an ordained Lay Reader.
Memorial Services to honor the life of Harold will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 21st, 2023 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service.
