Frances (Smith) Buckle

Frances Smith Buckle, age 92, died Tuesday, August 13th, 2024 from natural causes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel James Buckle, Jr., her parents, Bess and Worth Smith, and brother, J.D. Smith. She is survived by children, David Buckle of Sparta, Dan Buckle III and wife Roxolana of Mathews, NC, Suzanne Buckle and partner Travis Holbrook of Roaring Gap, and Karen Spires and husband Steve of Mount Pleasant, SC; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; as well as extended family, sister-in-law, Louise Smith, nephews, Jim Smith and wife Debbie, Tom Smith and wife Beth.

She graduated from Sparta High School and University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Frances lived and worked in various states through the years; Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, and Texas, as their Marine Corps family was deployed and later in a first retirement. Wherever she was she participated in community, church and civic activities.

She returned to Alleghany County in 1996 where she continued with volunteer services, serving on Boards of Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Alleghany County Library and Christ Church, and Antioch United Methodist Cemetery, Buckeye Ridge Property Association, as well as volunteer at Meals on Wheels, the Food Closet, and Sparta School Library.

Frances was an avid golfer, reader, quilter, painter, and crafter, and felt blessed to be "back home in the mountains," where she actively pursued these many interests.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 23rd, 2024 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father George Greer presiding. Inurnment will be immediately following at Antioch Methodist Church Cemetery in Roaring Gap. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

The family respectfully requests no food or visitors at the home.
