Obituary

Donald W. Mellis, age 93 of Glade Valley, NC; passed away Saturday, May 28th, 2022 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC.

Don was born July 21st, 1928 in Rochester, NY to the late Melville and Mary Van Hulle Mellis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Mikel Cruse.

Don was in the Navy from 1951-1953. He started his career at Gleason Gears while earning his degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. He retired after 25 years. After his first retirement, he worked at various other companies as an engineer.

Don leaves behind his wife, Mary Wilson Mellis; his son, Brian Mellis; two daughters: Donna Butterbaugh (Dave), and Mary Allen; two step-children: Scott Cruse and Tracye Dickens; six grandchildren: Dustin Butterbaugh, Jessica Butterbaugh, Julia B. Ham, Kacy Chilton, Wilson Allen and Mitchell Donald; six step-grandchildren: Daniel Cruse, John Cruse, Sarah Davis, Alex Dickens, Collin Cruse, and Dylan Cruse; several great and great-great grandchildren also survive.

Memorial Services to honor the life of Don will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, June 2nd, 2022 at Grace Community Church with Pastor Joel Stamper officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
