Cecelia Butler Mathis, also known as Marian Cecelia Butler Mathis, age 79 of Sparta, NC; went home to be with the Lord on July 15th, 2025.
Cecelia was born on April 12th, 1946 in Forest City, NC to the late Max and Marion Davis Butler. Cecelia graduated from Mars Hill College, and received her MA in childhood education from Appalachian State University with excellence in academics. She was a retired educator, teaching school for more than 30 years. Cecelia was honored for teaching on several occasions. She enjoyed nature, quilting, gardening, collecting antique glass, singing, photographing birds and spending time with her beloved cats. She spent her winters in her camper at the outer banks each year riding nature trails and enjoying the outdoors. She also enjoyed riding the backroads in the mountains to find special lunch spots in Whitetop, VA and Grayson Highlands, always remembering which dirt road to take!
Cecelia is survived by a sister, Phyllis Wortman and brother-in-law, John Wortman of Shelby; a cousin, Amy Dobert, and several other cousins and friends also survive.
Funeral Services to honor the life of Cecelia will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, July 25th, 2025 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Lawndale, NC. No formal visitation will be held.
