Carol Edwards Brooks Murphy, age 82, of 200 East Whitehead Street, Apt 2C, Sparta, NC; passed away Tuesday, August 20th, 2024 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.
Carol was born November 9th, 1941 in Alleghany County to the late James David and Ella Lou Edwards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Aubrey Brooks; her second husband, Bob Murphy; a son, Tim Brooks; a daughter-in-law, Sandy Brooks; two sisters: Roberta Cole and Linda Todd.
In 1957, Aubrey Brooks met the love of his life in the halls of Sparta High School and 4 years later, on June 15th, 1960, Ms. Carol Edwards became Mrs. Carol Brooks as their life together began. Along with the pride that Carol and Aubrey took in their family was also immense pride in the opportunity to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ through song with their two best friends, Bob and Joyce Gillespie. In 1965, the Peaceful Valley Quartet was formed and for almost 30 years the quartet traveled throughout the Southeast singing gospel music deriving their inspirational and unique style from the Chuck Wagon Gang, of whom they deeply admired. They made many friends along the way and continued these friendships throughout the years. Along with singing, Carol enjoyed painting, working puzzles with Geraldine Vaughn, and reading. She was a patron of the Alleghany County Public Library for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Caudill and husband James of Ennice; a son, Shelton Brooks and wife Yvette of Ennice; two stepchildren: Susan Hawks of Sparta, Sandy Hamm of Sparta; six grandchildren: Josh Brooks, Jake Brooks, Jeff Roten, Jordan Roten, Laura Brooks Clark and husband Brandon, Sarah Brooks; a sister, Eura Lee Phipps of Sparta; a brother, Mack Edwards of Ennice; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends also survive.
Funeral services to honor the life of Carol will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, August 26th, 2024 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service with Pastor Derek Cowan officiating. Interment will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and all other times at the residence of Shelton Brooks, 856 Bailey Rd, Ennice.
The family would like to give special thanks to Alleghany County EMS, Alleghany Health ED Staff, AirCare, and especially Lindsay Sullivan, NP and the staff of the Forsyth Palliative Care Unit for the excellent care they provided. Also, a special thanks to Doug Spurlin of the Alleghany County Public Library for always keeping her supplied with books.
