Betty Sue (Chappell) Poole

Betty Sue Chappell Poole, age 90, of Sparta; passed way Tuesday, June 25th, 2024 at her residence.

Betty Sue was born February 22nd, 1934 in Alleghany County to the late Lloyd Chappell, Sr. and Ethel Brooks Chappell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Poole; an infant grandson; a brother, Lloyd Chappell, Jr.; a son-in-law, Brady Proffit.

Betty Sue was co-owner/operator of Sparta Restaurant with her sister-in-law, Lucy Poole Royall for 30 years. She was a great cook and was famous for her pies. Betty Sue also loved to shop. After she retired, she enjoyed spending time with her family and taking care of her great-grandchildren. Her family described her as a very godly lady who prayed for them daily.

Survivors include two daughters: Judy Adams and husband Tony of Sparta; Mitzi Proffit of Sparta; five grandchildren: Nicole Adams Pruitt and husband Willie of Sparta, Misty Proffit McKnight and husband Tommy of Sparta, James Mitchell Adams and wife Gari Leigh of Pinnacle, Benjamin Matthew Adams and wife Amanda of Mount Airy, Brandon Seth Proffit and wife Brandi of Sparta; thirteen great-grandchildren; a step-great-grandson; two sisters: Edith DeBord and husband Ronald of Ennice, Maxine Evans and husband Jack of Glade Valley; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Chappell of Ennice; many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services to honor the life of Betty Sue will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, June 30th, 2024 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service with Pastor Mickey Brooks officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
