Alice Marie Sturgill

Mrs. Marie Halsey Sturgill, age 100, of 15 Smithwood Lane, Piney Creek, NC; passed away Monday, August 24th, 2020 at her residence. She was born August 7th, 1920 in Alleghany County, NC to the late John Reid and Flossye Robbins Halsey. Marie was in the first graduating class of home economics at Appalachian Teachers College. She taught at Piney Creek Elementary School for 16 years. An avid seamstress, she also loved crocheting and experimenting with new recipes. Her quick wit and infections laughter brightened every room. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Sturgill; a son John Sturgill; a granddaughter, Teresa Sturgill; a great-grandson, Jacob Hill; a brother, Sam Halsey; infant brother, Rodney Halsey; infant sister, Hazel Halsey; two daughters-in-law: Frances and Doris Sturgill; a grandson-in-law, Lonnie Halsey.

She is survived by her children: Dan Sturgill of Piney Creek, Thom Sturgill and wife Joyce of Ft. Pierce, FL., Becky Smith and husband Cliff of Piney Creek, Barbie Atwood and husband Ronnie of Piney Creek; sixteen grandchildren: Tammy Crose of Clearfield, KY., Rose Richardson and husband Mark of Piney Creek, Daniel Sturgill, Jr. and wife Lise of Victoria British Columbia, Sandie Sturgill and fiance' Richard of Baton Rouge, LA., Mary Alice Sturgill of Greenville, SC., Bruce Sturgill and friend Barbara Evans of Piney Creek, Stuart Sturgill and wife Becca of Ft. Pierce, FL., Rhonda Steffenhagen and husband Larry of Southport, NC., Ruth Ann Hill and husband Roger of Piney Creek, Amanda Sawyer and husband Glwyn of Boliva, NC., David Sturgill and fiance, Ruth of Ft. Pierce, FL., Christy Halsey of Sparta, Heather West and husband Joe of Ft. Pierce, FL., Cathy Segraves and husband Tracy of Piney Creek, Hannah Halsey and husband Eddie of Sparta, Erin Jones and husband Brandon of Piney Creek: thirty-two great-grandchildren and forty-four great great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Peggy Halsey of Jefferson, NC, Lorraine Sturgill of Piney Creek; nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral Services to honor Marie's long life will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, August 30, 2020 in the chapel of Thomas Family Funeral Service at 115 Hawthorne Street in Sparta with Reverend Eric Miller officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and all other times at the residence.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions and the safety of the family and guest attending the visitation and services, mask will be required.
