Danny Carl Widener, age 74, of Sparta, NC, passed away at his home on December 6, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC, on July 20, 1945, to the late Ervin Malcolm and Margaret (Burns) Widener.
Danny is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Ellen (Andrews) Widener, of the home, a son, Tommy Holt (Tina) of Thurmond, a daughter, Amber Micka (Nick), of Rockford, Illinois, a step-daughter, Melissa Hughes (Greg) of Asheville, and a step-son, Jeff Reeves (Ellen) of Elkin, NC. Also surviving are his three grandsons, Daniel, Matthias, and Judah Luke Micka, and step-grandchildren, Matthew Murphy, Kelsie Hughes, Grace Hughes, and Jasmine Royall (Junior), and four step great-grandchildren, Carter, Russ, Riley, and Leah, and a brother, Ervin Widener, Jr., of Arizona, and three special sisters-in-law, Gail McCuiston (Ronnie), Evelyn Jones (Larry), and Sylvia Cave. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A special niece, Tammy McAlpine, of Winston-Salem, shared his love of fishing and boating along with her husband, Hal, and son, AJ. Danny was also an avid deer, squirrel, and rabbit hunter. He came to Alleghany County in the early 1980s to help in the Christmas tree industry. Later he worked at High Meadows Country Club and New River Golf Course. He especially loved working at the golf course for Mike Caudill and with David Charles. Danny retired from Alleghany County Schools and then returned to New River Golf Course for several more years of work until his health began to fail. Danny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and faithful Christian brother to many in his community.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his sister, Sue Widener, and brothers, Gene and Ricky Widener, nephew, Ricky, and great-niece, Kristie.
Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation at Full Gospel Church of 133 Reynolds Road, Sparta, NC, on Saturday, December 14, at 11:00 am, with a celebration of life service to follow at 12:00 pm, with Brother Cody Hamm, Rev. Jeff Reeves, and Rev. Melissa Hughes officiating. Special speakers will include Amber Micka and David Charles. Burial will follow at the Saddle Mountain Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Ennice, NC.
